On November 7, 2023, Benton Harbor High School held election day. The residents of Benton Harbor were able to come together and vote on who they wanted their future mayor to be.
Former mayor, Marcus Muhammad, ran against Gwen Johnson and the residents were able to decide who they would want to serve their city. Johnson has done many things around the community and is known for her positive energy. Meanwhile, this was Muhammad's third time running for mayor of Benton Harbor.
Unfortunately, on election day Muhammad wasn’t in town for the election, but rather he was on a plane coming from Washington D.C where he was recognized by President Joe Biden for his hard work of getting rid of the contaminated water in Benton Harbor.
The election results were announced later that night. Muhammad had a count of 483 votes, while Johnson had a count of 361 votes. Congratulations to Mayor Muhammad for winning the mayoral election this year. This will be his third term as serving mayor of Benton Harbor.
This election reminded us that every vote matters, especially in a small town. Congratulations to Mayor Muhammad on his well deserved victory, and best luck to him as he continues to serve the city.
