Friday, November 17, 2023, Varsity Cheerleading Coach Candice Walker hosted Meet the Team night in the Don Farnum Gym. The freshly painted walls, freshly waxed floor, and fresh new outfits made the event special, like a fresh start. The crowd was thrilled to welcome the new cheerleading and basketball teams.
Assistant Coach Devin Alexander tasked me with dividing the varsity players into two teams, and I tried to equally match the teams. Antwan, “Chick”, who is a senior guard, was teamed up with Jaeden Meeks a senior wing who didn’t play last year due to injury, Rodney Ford another senior guard, the new freshmen KeSean Hobbs listed at 6’4”, Careem Williams a 6’2” junior wing, and Latrell “Willie” Johnson a two-year guard who can shoot from the outside.
The other team had Josiah King a senior guard/wing, Javon Mason a senior who didn’t play last year due to injury, Da’Juan Hassel a first-year varsity guard, J’Kwon Lewis a junior guard looking to put on for rankings in the state, Avion Wilson another junior who is looking to be noticed this year, DeSean Mathison a two-year varsity wing who is ready to work and hungry for minutes, and Myron Rice a new student coming from Countryside Charter.
They all played well in the scrimmage game. No one got hurt, and everyone had fun. Unfortunately, a fight between girls in the crowd ended the game early.
